NetScreen 25 - Juniper

I can’t reach my virtual server!!! Why?

Some things to check when you have problems reaching your Virtual Server from the network:

Has your Virtual Server a network card configured? DUH :-)
Is that network card connected to the network? DUH :-)
IP-address conflict?
Same MAC-address as any other machine(virtual or physical). <= Many times this is the cause!!!!

Converting Fixed-Size Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) to a Dynamically Expanding Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) Part 2

Last time I blogged about VHD becoming too small. This is a big problem when it concerns your boot disk containing your system (OS).

These are the steps I have taken to solve the problem:

Take a backup of your VHD.
Run the "VHD Resizer" tool to add extra disk space to the VHD.
Start the VHD and take a look at the disk via Disk Management. You will see that the disk has now extra unallocated disk space.
Because the disk is the system disk you cannot use DISKPART to add the unallocated disk space to the system partition. But…
Shutdown the VHD and again take a backup.
Network boot the VHD and load the "Microsoft Windows Vista PE" image. You will need Windows Deployment Services to do network booth the image, but that is another story.
Run the following commands from the command prompt:
1. DISKPART
2. Select Disk 0
3. List Volumes
4. Select Volume 1 Is the volume on the disk shown via List Volumes.
5. Extend size=8000 Extends with 8GB
Reboot the VHD and voila: extra space.

Converting Fixed-Size Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) to a Dynamically Expanding Virtual Hard Disk (VHD)

Fixed-size VHD containing the OS can be a pain…I know.

For various reasons your VHD becomes too small in size (Windows Updates, Service Packs, Log Files,…) and its fixed in size. Searching for a solution I came across this tool:

Strange error in SharePoint 2007 RSS Feeds – “The changeToken refers to a time…”

Occasionally the following error occurs when accessing a RSS feed of a SharePoint 2007 Blog:

And then it goes away again… . The only thing I found that could be related to the problem is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932563/en-us and the installation of a Daylight Saving Time patch (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836).

Will try to find a solution and will keep you posted.

3Com switch auto-configuration ip address

For those who are searching for it:

The ip address of 3Com baseline switch not in range of a DHCP server is 169.254.X.Y where X and Y are the two MAC Address bits in decimal.

If your switches MAC address ends with F1B7 the ip address is 169.254.241.183.

Outlook 2007 can’t receive mail in Windows Vista

A problem I encountered a while ago was that in our network Outlook couldn't receive (download) any mail messages. To be more specific: Outlook starts to download the messages but it is so slow not a single one is completely received. Everything worked fine on Windows XP but not in Vista.

The problem was solved by running the following command in a "Command Prompt" box with elevated privileges (Run as Administrator ):

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

The setting is retained permanently.

The actual problem is that Windows Vista has a new technology "TCP Window Scaling" and that the router does not support this or that the firewall is suspicious about this.

In the mean time a KB article has been released by Microsoft describing this problem.
